“I am…”
This simple yet powerful prompt opens the door to understanding your true identity, beliefs, and values. By writing “I am” followed by whatever comes to mind, you unlock valuable insights about how you view yourself, your strengths, and the unique roles you play in life.
Many of us merge our identity with our work, tasks and experiences, defining ourselves by what we do rather than who we truly are. With limitless access to technology, it’s easy to lose sight of our inner selves, to the point that our passions, dreams, and even our sense of fulfillment get wrapped up in productivity and outcomes.
Imagine, instead, focusing on who you want to become, rather than just what you want to achieve. Shifting this perspective gives you permission to explore what truly matters to you.
Take a few minutes to try this: write “I am…” at the top of a blank page. Keep adding to the sentence until no more responses come up. Allow your answers to flow without judgment or limitation. Then, go back and highlight responses that reveal:
Roles you value: partner, parent, artist
States of being: unfit, healthy or fulfilled
Emotions: calm, joyful, anxious
Core beliefs: “I can create my own path” or “I struggle to trust others”
Reflect on what these responses mean for you. Do any roles need more attention? Are there states of being you want to cultivate more of? What emotions do you want to feel daily? What beliefs are helping or hindering you from reaching your potential?
Taking time with this exercise can reveal areas that need your focus and growth, shedding light on who you truly are beneath the labels and routines.
Let this be your opportunity to rediscover yourself and bring your best qualities forward, aligned with the person you most want to be.
